What Decision Repeats?
If you decide the same thing every month, the chart should make the input for that decision visible without a special report.
Home/Services/Bookkeeping/Chart Of Accounts Setup
The chart of accounts is the question list your reports are allowed to answer. Build it around your decisions and the answers arrive on their own.
Built too thin and everything disappears into one bucket called supplies. Built too fine and there are two hundred accounts, nobody codes consistently, and the reports are unreadable in a different way.
The right structure sits between those, and it is specific to your business. A contractor needs cost categories that map to how jobs are priced. A shop needs cost of goods separated from operating costs. An investor needs the properties split so one cannot hide inside another.
If you decide the same thing every month, the chart should make the input for that decision visible without a special report.
Categories exist to make leaks findable. A cost you cannot isolate is a cost you cannot manage.
A lender, an investor or your own tax preparer will read the same statements. The structure should not need translating for them.
Changing a chart of accounts mid-life is more delicate than building one, because the history has to remain comparable. Move things carelessly and last year stops lining up with this year, which destroys the main use of having history at all.
We map the old structure to the new one deliberately, decide what gets restated and what does not, and document the change so anyone reading across the boundary knows what happened and why.
We do not start from a generic industry list and hand it over. The useful version of this work comes from asking how you price, how you buy, where you think the money goes and where it actually goes, and building from those answers.
It usually takes one working session and a follow-up once you have run a period through the new structure and seen what it produces.
What clients most often pair with this, and the category it belongs to.
The first conversation is about your business and where it stands, not a pitch.
