Scope Creep Never Captured
Extra work done to keep a client happy, agreed on site, never documented and never billed. The most common single cause of a good job turning poor.

Contractors carry costs long before they get paid, and the books have to reflect that honestly or every job looks wrong at some point in its life.
Construction is the clearest case of why generic bookkeeping falls apart. Money goes out for months before it comes in, billing runs on progress rather than delivery, and a portion of what you have earned is held back until long after the work is done.
Handled with ordinary cash-basis habits, the accounts swing wildly and tell you nothing. Handled properly, they show you what a job is really doing while there is still time to influence it.

Real costs of delivering work that often sit in overhead, making labor-heavy jobs look better than they are.
Time spent fixing something rarely gets coded as such, so the pattern that would explain it never shows up in a report.
The first is the bank balance. A healthy balance mid-job is often somebody else's money, front-loaded billing that will be consumed by costs still to come. Owners who steer by the balance get caught by this repeatedly.
The second is revenue by month. In a business where a job spans a quarter, monthly revenue is an artefact of billing timing rather than a description of performance. Job-level reporting is the only version that means anything.
Contractors usually have a bonding agent, a lender and their own tax preparer, and each wants the numbers in a slightly different shape. Keeping the underlying record clean means those requests are formatting exercises rather than reconstruction projects.
When one of them asks a question we cannot answer from the books, that is a gap worth closing, and we would rather find it in a quiet month than during an application.
